The design project involved the complete exterior and interior transformation and extension of an existing three-storey holiday home, situated on a steeply sloping site with panoramic views. The client's vision was to create a modern, timeless residence that captures the distinctive character and close connection to nature of traditional mountain architecture through contemporary design solutions.
One of the greatest challenges of the project was balancing the constraints of the existing building, the significant slope of the terrain, and the strict local building regulations. Our aim was to establish a cohesive architectural identity that respects the original building's characteristics while introducing a fresh appearance and contemporary spatial relationships.
A defining feature of the redesigned building is its asymmetrical gable roof, which responds to the proportions of the original structure while providing a harmonious roof solution for the extended living spaces. The flat-roofed design of the lowest level allows for the creation of spacious terraces that take full advantage of the sloping site and the surrounding landscape. Extending the roofline into a pergola designed to support climbing plants creates a light, natural transition between the building and its surroundings, while providing a shaded and inviting outdoor retreat.
The façade design emphasizes natural materials and contrasting textures. The robust stone cladding of the lower level establishes a solid, timeless foundation, while the horizontal timber cladding of the upper floors introduces warmth and visual lightness. The interplay of these two materials offers a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional mountain architecture.
The result is a distinctive, nature-inspired residential concept in which the characteristics of the existing building, the connection to the surrounding landscape, and contemporary architectural solutions come together in a harmonious whole.
