Groundhouse - Mőcsény

As part of a special commission, we designed this creation integrated into a hillside.

The client entrusted us with the conceptual design of an earth-sheltered house incorporating parametric elements, organically embedded into the gently rolling landscape of the Southern Transdanubian region.

In terms of structural technology and floor plan organization, the goal was to remain as close as possible to conventional contemporary construction solutions. Therefore, despite its organic exterior form, the layout is rectangular, just like that of any typical residential property. It is characterized by vertical walls and a horizontal reinforced concrete roof slab. The external curved geometry is defined by retaining walls designed to support the surrounding soil, conceived as monolithic reinforced concrete structures.

The building is opened out from beneath the ground at four points:

  • On the garage side, where the curved geometry also ensures convenient vehicle access and parking.
  • At the main entrance, where a water feature reinforces the application of organic forms.
  • At the kitchen–dining–living area, where a spiral-like twisting geometry creates a partially sheltered pool terrace.
  • Toward the hillside, through an atrium-like opening primarily serving to provide natural light to the bedrooms and the study. At the center of the internal terraced courtyard, a reflective pool with a small green island has been designed.

The residence includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The property also accommodates a sauna, multiple storage rooms and a pantry, as well as a covered, enclosed two-car garage.
